The hippie subculture began its development as a youth movement in the United States in the early 1960s and subsequently developed throughout the world.
Its origins can be traced to European social movements in the 19th and early 20th centuries, such as the Bohemians, and the influence of Eastern religion and spirituality. It is directly influenced and inspired by the Beat Generation
From about 1967, its basic ethos – including harmony with nature, communal living, artistic experimentation, especially in music, sexual experimentation and the widespread use of recreational drugs – spread around the world during the counterculture of the 1960s sixty, who has become closely associated with the subculture.
